When the Beast wakens, nothing will stop him from claiming his bride, even if it means destroying everyone she loves.

Vynasha is certain of two things: she is forever bound to the monster who loves her, and she can never return to Castle Bitterhelm again. Escape has come at a high cost, and though Vynasha freed the imprisoned beasts, she has awakened an ancient evil that now stalks her. For the curse is unfinished with the one the prophecy spoke of, and Grendel continues to haunt her dreams.

This time she won’t fight the oncoming darkness alone.

Ceddrych may not be her brother by blood, but their bond has only grown stronger. When the wolves they’ve found refuge with threaten them, Ceddrych and Vynasha must fight together to overcome enemies around them. Danger lurks at every corner, and only by playing the pack alpha’s games can they survive the winter.

One thing rings true in the waking world and her dreams: Grendel won’t sleep forever.

Only by claiming her powers can Vynasha protect her newfound family and prevent the ruination of Wylderland. A dark tale of enchantment and woe, perfect for fans of Margaret Rogerson and Holly Black, Scarred Beauty is the second installment of the epic Wylder Tales Series!

Grendel was waiting for her within a watery gray reflection of the bedroom Vynasha once occupied in the castle. His back was to her, facing a hearth filled with blue flames. Floating lights danced about the edge of her vision as she rose from the side of her bed. She’d been crouched in the same position in Asa’s bedroom, she recalled.

“Asa,” Vynasha gasped and rushed to her feet, then pressed a hand to her stomach as a wave of nausea crashed over her.

“Vynasha?” Grendel was before her in a flash, firm hands catching her by the waist as he helped to settle her atop the bed. “Thank Crafter you finally came. I called for you, did you not hear my warning?”

“I heard… Let me go,” Vynasha groaned as she pushed away from him until her back rested against the headboard.

Grendel flinched and pain crumpled his features as he sat back on the edge of the bed and his features seemed to glow brighter than anything else in the room. “What has happened? You were drawing too much attention to yourself. It was only a matter of time before you drew her creatures to retrieve you.”

“One of her creatures have already come to destroy everything in their path to reach me,” she spat back.

Grendel straightened, fury in his violet gaze. “What do you mean? Was it one of the beasts?”

“It was a demon, a being of shadow,” she spat. “It tried to kill every child in the village and then me before I ended the bastard.”

Grendel ran a hand over his tired face and turned back to the blue flames. “I had hoped…”

Vynasha fisted the bedsheets. “Hoped for what? That your bitch of a mother would care for the innocents that suffer because of her curse?”

A bitter laugh escaped her as she savored his discomfort. “You bloody royals care so much for your own grievances but so little for the plight of common folk. Did you never consider the consequences of sending me away before she could trap me under her thrall?”

Grendel leaned forward and placed his hand near her thigh, too close for comfort. “You are mine, Vynasha. She cannot bind you without destroying me, and I will never be weak again.”

Vynasha refused to be intimidated by him, this price she was bound to. His eyes widened as she leaned forward. “If you’re so strong, why are you hiding in this dream realm and not reclaiming your birthright from Ferox?”

Grendel’s gaze swept over her features and dipped past her neck. “It is not so simple as that.”

Vynasha scoffed and gritted her teeth against the lurch in her stomach. “It’s obvious you are a coward.”

Grendel snatched her leg and sharply tugged. A gasp ripped from her throat as Vynasha fell against the sheets and the prince loomed over her with a hand inching around her waist, his thumb grazing her breast.

It’s not real!

But she felt every part of his body pressing against hers, and her blood sang to be reunited with its other half.

“Get off of me,” she hissed and dug her claws into his chest through the fabric of his shirt.

“I warned you before, did you not listen?” Grendel pressed his forehead to hers, his skin cooler than hers, like an impression of new fallen snow. “I have endeavored to keep you safe from her, from him, and every beast that would try to use you.” His lips brushed hers with every word. “And still you do not understand…”

Vynasha’s breath hitched and a part of her burned to close the distance, to press her lips to his, to pull him harder against her until they were one flesh. Did she truly want him or was this their bond, drawing them together against her will? Could Grendel’s magick work even here in this shadow realm? How much worse would it be were they truly together?

She bared her teeth at the prince but clenched her thighs together beneath him to relieve the growing ache. “Stop talking in riddles and tell me, then,” she snapped, desperately clinging to her mask of fury.

“You already know,” he murmured and grazed his nose along hers. “You know, love…”

Vynasha hesitated at the devastation in his eyes, the unspoken apology. “The bond,” she breathed.

Grendel smiled as he lifted a hand to trace the path her scars took over her neck, along her jaw and the side of her face. “And you know what will happen if I waken?”

Vynasha felt so little where the fire had deadened and warped her skin. Magick hadn’t saved her beauty, and it had been worth the chance to save Wyll. Grendel’s touch broke past that numbness now, the same way he had broken through her walls before. She hated him, oh how she hated the reminder she no longer belonged to herself.

“You wouldn’t be able to stop.” Despair bled into her voice with the truth. “You would send everything and everyone in your possession to reclaim me.”

“No, love, I would come for you myself.” Grendel’s smile twisted with avarice as his touch firmed at her neck and he drew her against his mouth. “And I would raze everything in my path because I would not care. Do you not see? My cowardice as you called it may be the only kindness I can offer you, Vynasha. Please do not squander my sacrifice again.”
